Checking Profile Photos
A reverse image search can find a stolen photo. It cannot prove a person is genuine.
The FTC and FBI both recommend checking profile photos when you are concerned about an online relationship.
What to do
- Save or screenshot a clear profile photo that you are allowed to use.
- Use a reputable reverse image search service or image search tool.
- Look for the same face or photo under different names, jobs, locations, or profiles.
- Search more than one photo if you have them.
- Search the person’s claimed job, name, city, or unusual story separately.
If you find the same photo under another identity
Do not ignore it. Save the search result and check the original source. A stolen or reused photo is a serious identity concern.
If you find nothing
That is not proof. A photo may be new, private, cropped, altered, mirrored, or simply not indexed by the search tool. Treat a clean image search as one small piece of information.
Do not let one photo carry the entire relationship.
Combine image checking with live video, consistent details, actions over time, meeting history, independent verification, and the way important questions are handled.
